The Municipal Liquor Store ("The Muni") is a typical small town liquor store for package sales as well as the local "watering hole" for many years. We strive to keep our prices as low as possible and serve the city of Le Center in positive ways.

In past years, we have contributed $75,000 to the City General Fund and are hoping to increase that in the future. The Muni employs two full-time employees and eight part-time employees. Through local support, we hope to have continued success as a business and city entity.

The Muni provides both on-sale and off-sale liquor sales Monday through Saturday. Patrons must be 21 or older.

Please keep us in mind for your holiday and special event needs! We supply our off sale services for graduations, weddings, birthdays, holiday parties and any other special events. Our management has several years of experience in the liquor and service industry and can help you with your event needs.

Also be sure to check out our daily and weekly specials too!

Municipal Liquor Store

The Municipal Liquor Store (“The Muni”) is not your typical small town liquor store….  We are a rare combination store; meaning, we have both an off-sale and on-sale.  We have a variety of beers, wines, spirits and more; as well as serving as the local “watering hole”.  Even though we are a small single store operation, we work very hard to keep our prices as low as possible.

We serve the city of Le Center by contributing our profits to the City’s General Fund.  We transfer $25,000 to $75,000 annually, which all-in-all helps to keep city taxes lower.

The Muni employs three full-time and seven part-time employees.

We have been supporting the community since 1948!  We strive for and hope to have continued success as a business and city entity so we can serve the community for many more years to come.

We provide both off-sale and on-sale liquor sales Monday through Sunday.

We have daily bar specials and have Happy Hour: Mon – Fri (3:30pm to 6:30pm)

*Keep an eye out for Entertainment…. Live Music, DJ’s, Country Western Night, Beer Bashes, Bean Bags, Pfeiffer, Cribbage, Meat Raffles, Cooking Contests, Tastings and more.  We have these randomly throughout the year….. Don’t miss them!  Also, be sure to join us on Sundays during the football season for some great specials and our monthly tailgate party.  Friend us on Facebook to stay up to date!

Information on Municipal Liquor Stores
Municipal liquor stores started after Prohibition as a means for cities to control the distribution of alcohol in their communities. Later, cities found their municipal liquor store could be a method of generating needed non-tax revenue. Today, the purpose of municipal liquor stores is to "control the distribution of alcohol - while simultaneously generating income for the community."
"Controlling the sale of alcohol" is different than "responsible service." All alcohol sellers should serve responsibly - don't sell to underage or intoxicated individuals. Controlling the sale of alcohol means reflecting a community attitude - often resulting in a strategic and publicly supported reduction in liquor operation revenue

Off-sale municipal liquor operations have geographic exclusivity but not competitive exclusivity. This competition has caused municipal liquor operations to become more business savvy - with the goal of encouraging customers to purchase at the municipal liquor operation, instead of somewhere else.

There are less than 200 cities with off-sale or on-sale / off-sale combination municipal liquor operations, operating approximately 230 facilities. Sales range from approximately $125,000 to over $15 million per year. Total annual sales are approximately $340 million with total annual profits of approximately $30 million. Profits are used by cities for general fund activities or special projects including recreation programs, elderly transportation and public safety equipment.

Sales have increased over the past decade and the trend is continuing.
The strong trend in large cities and small towns is to remodel and / or expand existing facilities and build new facilities.

Municipal liquor operations can advertise, promote, price etc. like independently owned operators. However, because of the "alcohol control" element, municipal liquor operators may choose not to engage in certain, otherwise legal, activities.
