General Fire Safety Statement
In recent years in the United States, 3,500–3,700 people lose their lives and 13,000–14,000 are injured due to fires each year. While these numbers may seem small statistically, the impact on individuals and families is devastating. Nearly 80% of fire-related deaths occur in homes, and many of these tragedies could be prevented with simple fire safety measures.
Fire safety centers around four key areas:
- Education – Understanding common fire hazards
- Prevention – Reducing or eliminating risks in the home
- Detection – Installing and maintaining working smoke detectors
- Response – Having a clear plan in case of fire
By addressing these areas, families can significantly reduce their risk. Many fire safety practices are inexpensive, easy to implement, and require little time—often, becoming simple habits that make a big difference.
Every home is unique, and some hazards may not be covered by general guidance. If you believe something in your home could pose a fire risk, it’s best to address it immediately. When it comes to fire safety, it’s always better to be safe than sorry. The saying “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” has never been more true.
