WATER & SEWER BILLING FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Does your water bill seem high?

There are many things that can contribute to high water usage that you should check frequently:

1. A leaky faucet that drips at a rate of one drip per second can waste more than 3,000 gallons per year.

2. A silent leak in your toilet can waste several thousand gallons of water each year. To determine if you have a leak, put a few drops of food coloring in your tank. If colored water appears in the bowl without flushing, there’s a leak and repairs are needed.

3. Frequency and length of time your water softener regenerates.

4. Faulty furnace dehumidifier. Check the floor in your utility room to make sure it’s not wet by your furnace.

5. An outside spigot may be left/turned on without your knowledge.

How is my water meter read?

At the end of the month, the city reads your water meter by a radio reader device. Once all meters have been read, the readings are then downloaded into our utility billing software. An abnormal use report is then printed and all readings on this report are verified before billing. Your water meter is typically located in your basement, if you have one. If you don’t have a basement, it is normally located in your utility room. You can compare your last reading on your water/sewer bill card with the current reading on your water meter for accuracy.

How can I tell if my water meter is not working correctly?

If it is making a loud grinding noise, please contact our Public Works Department by calling City Hall   507-357-4450. If you believe your water meter is faulty, the Public Works Department can send it in to see if it is working correctly. If it is working correctly, the resident will be billed to have the water meter analyzed.

Water Conservation Facts

Water Conservation Tips for Consumers:

• A shower generally uses less water than a bath.

• Don’t leave water running while washing your face, shaving or brushing your teeth.

• Don’t let the faucet run for a cold drink. Keep a jug of water cooling in the refrigerator.

• Run your dishwasher only when it is full.

• Run your washing machine only when you have a full load.

• A lush green lawn requires 1 to ½ inches of water a week. Keep in mind the amount of rainfall that might fall on your yard and adjust your watering schedule accordingly.

• Morning is the best time to water most lawns. Before 10:00 a.m. is best of all because rising heat later in the day tends to steal a lot of water through evaporation.
